1. Maria Cecilia, tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? What do you do? What inspires you? Who was Maria Cecilia before LaMulticolor?
I am proudly Guatemalan. With my partner, I am the founder and creative designer of LaMulticolor, a local brand. I have been in the cultural and fashion scene for the last 20 years. I’ve been doing fashion production and marketing. Also, I have been responsible for the events and communications at the local Textile Museum in the last decade.
2. How did you begin with LaMulticolor?
Organically, by intervening local objects to make them useful; contemporary for my own use, taste and needs. Furthermore, it resulted in my first artisan relationships. Thus, making the very first prototypes, testing them. Try and failure began since then.
3. What is your biggest achievement with LaMulticolor?
Our biggest achievement has been transforming a dream. That dream is a concept based on a business model that looks forward to transform many thing. Like traditional local objects, techniques and materials, into contemporary pieces. Transforming them into a brand already well-recognized regionally.

4. What are the biggest challenges when it comes to working with recycling objects to create handbags?
Recycled materials have taught us so much. The fashion industry is broken and we need to change the system. We’d do that by making fashion circular and eliminating, the concept of waste. (plastic waste would be our main concern.). In our case, our country, landscape, rivers and sea are drowning in plastic. This means we have to be fully committed and have enormous levels of innovation to achieve this. We know we are interconnected and conscious that our actions will impact us an others in the near future. Therefore, we see this as an exciting opportunity to boost our creative potential and help the planet we live in.
5. What is the thing you enjoy the most about your work?
I am passionate of materials and LaMulticolor is our lab. We enjoy the creative process of new collections and prototypes. Our fieldtrips are invaluable!
6. What is your dream? Where do you see yourself in the future?
LaMulticolor is my dream.
I dream of being a real example to my daughters.
Of growing hand in hand with our team, families and communities.
I dream about high volume handmade production, proudly made in Guatemala.
About surprising the world with our concept and products.
I dream about cleaning my country from plastic waste.

7. What message would you like to share to our audience?
Believe in your dreams and fight for them! Be exemplary, your actions talk about who you really are. Do not try to explain it, just act accordingly to your values and believe in yourself at all times. If you’re privileged, do help others by helping you. Believe there are no limits than the ones you create. Go for it! Leave a legacy for your children, your country and your planet. Life is short!
